Appearance: main appearance | main appearance 2 | punch shot | action shot | walking

Abilities:
Fluent in Latin and Spanish: able to read, translate, write, and speak the language itself. Knows some other languages such as Indonesian, but not as extensively. Because of the life he chose for himself, Nathan is an experienced free-runner, climbing buildings and obstacles others may be incapable of overcoming. On a technical Nathan can be called a thief ( considering that he helped an old friend break into a museum) but he would prefer to be known as a... treasure hunter.

Being a fortune seeker, he needs to be capable of other things, and he has proven so with his knowledge in weaponry, geography, the past, and so on. His fascination with history has led to his in-depth understanding with artifacts old and more recent, legend and fact. In addition to this, Nathan is also a deep-sea salvage expert and action professional.

For Nathan's use in armaments, please refer to CAPABILITIES for explicit items / techniques he has been proven capable of employing.

Personality:
Those who know Nathan Drake usually strike up the image of a cocky guy with little to lose: the kind that knows when it's time to quit, but would rather go on with the show.

Upon first impression, Nathan is a friendly, happy-go-luck guy. He comes off as the kind of person you could find walking down the street. His life just has a few more twists, in comparison. He has a sense of humor that can be uncalled for at time. He's keen to crack a joke in nearly any situation, be it grave or not. This humour shows up at the most unexpected times, sometimes used to even poke at the ridiculousness of his situations. At times he may come off as immature, a loudmouth or even a smartass. He gets excited easily: frustrated too, with his strengths and his weaknesses.

Despite any warnings that may be given, Nathan will almost always be willing to take the first step of the journey. He's the type that would rather see something for himself before he believes any word of it, thus leading him into intense and fast-paced situations. This does not mean that he is completely reckless, or an idiot; even Nathan Drake has a sense of self-preservation. If he can avoid having to fight, he will. He is a resourceful person, able to make due with what he has at times more often than not. He is more than capable of taking care of his own matters, relying on few for help when it comes down to it. If he can do it himself, he will.

To his enemies, he is the metaphorical 'thorn in my side' and in return, they are no less. He regards his foes with a dry attitude when he can, sarcastic and cynical even. If it is possible to get his friends out of harm's way, he is willing to bargain his life for their own. He is severely loyal in this sense, devoted to those he cares for to the point where he will protect them no matter what. Along with this loyalty, he is not one to leave someone behind despite any disadvantages it may yield; if it comes down to helping someone, he likely will, nine times out of ten. This has been proven to bite him in the ass time and time again; when he puts himself at risk to help someone else, it means backtracking or going off the path.

He has a large amount of respect for human life, refusing to kill under any circumstance. Still, he will not hesitate to defend himself or others that he cares for. No matter what kind of person they are, Nathan will let them go if he has a choice, or let them get what they deserve. He can be considerate at times, flippant in other situations; he may listen at first, but he puts his foot down when a suggestion clashes with a belief or moral he holds. Stubborn to a fault with the tenacity to keep him going (mentally and physically), it is this type of thinking that has him pursuing legend and stories. He finds excitement in the adventure, believes that thrill to be worth more than anything a treasure can give, but it doesn't help to find fortune every now and then, as evident by how frequently he goes off on these journeys with a profit as the main goal, usually.

Despite his 'chivalrous' attitude and the idea of a hero that comes hand in hand with the term, Nathan is from from that. He possesses a drive that is capable of burning out quickly if he is not careful. Should the journey prove to be more dangerous than expected, should he be pushed to all possible limits and actually fall because of it, Nathan would wish to give up for his sake and for the sake of others, more specifically those he had dragged into the conflict with his actions. More often than not, he is pushed only by the encouragement of those he trusts; he returns to the task at hand with a renewed vigor, despite his proven misfortune with things, something he has acknowledged himself ("Everything I touch turns to shit!").

That brings in Nathan's 'luck. It never is the best it can be. Proven through his adventures in various locations (Indonesia, the Amazon, Borneo, Istanbul..), what seems to be simple at first never really goes that way. Old abandoned building? The floor will probably break when Nate walks over it. Chance of getting caught? It'll happen. Nathan's feelings can be best summed up with one of his more notable catchphrases: "Aww, crap!"

Nathan's relationships can be tricky; his history with people is not as consistent as another's may be. Drake has been friends with both shady characters and good people. Most of this succeeds in proving that Drake has no 'people intuition'. He places his trust in others and sometimes --usually-- the results turn out to be for the worse.

Life goes on, Nathan rolls with the punches as best as he can because it is the best he can do. No matter when the chips are down, if he can fight, then Nathan will. He just needs a little push time and time again.

History:
Greatness.

Born to parents who had little to do in his life (his mother committed suicide and his father gave him up as a ward of the statue by the time he was five), Nathan Drake's name had never been his own in the beginning. After growing up in an orphanage called Saint Francis Boys' home, where the nuns were insistent on studies but not so tentative with making sure that all of their charges were where they were supposed to be. Somehow, he wound up in the streets of Colombia, grew up accustomed to a life of thievery and sneaking around. He grew up with a strong fascination in history, art, and all things related to Sir Francis Drake. It was this interest that gave birth to his persona, that possessed him to believe himself as a descendant of the famous explorer.

This interest would entangle young Nathan in stumbling upon a museum exhibit dedicated to El Draque, and how he would not only come into possession of the ring that once belonged to the Vice Admiral, but how he would get in the way of a woman who saw him as nothing more than scum, unfit for the artifact. It was also here in Colombia that he would encounter Victor Sullivan ('Sully') a man who would take Nate under his wing and help him to refine his skills as a treasure hunter. In the process, Nate would end up in jail more than once, but as he grew he picked up more skills than a man could even imagine; knowledge in firearms, climbing, deep-sea salvaging, and more.

Move forward, twenty something years, to the near present. The years have sent Nathan running back and forth between the premise of treasure, the temptation of adventure.

He was hired for a job that involved searching for the Eye of Indra. Said job turned out to be a circle of betrayal; first Nate betrayed his employer, met up with a man he had betrayed --Eddy Raja on a much earlier job, and ended up being betrayed by the sister of the latter. It left Drake and Eddy on a dock, both of them quiet and baffled. They agreed to part ways and never talk of the incident again.

Nathan has searched for El Dorado, only to have it turn into an insane scheme. It would be on this journey that he would nearly lose Sully, meet Elena Fisher, a woman who would win over his heart without even trying, and here that he would interfere with the plans of Gabriel Roman, Atoq Navarro --a crime lord and mercenary-- and again--
Eddy Raja. The tales of this city of gold were not fortune; they shone, but it was nothing that had been expected. The treasure was actually a curse, and it needed to stay hidden. Throwing himself into danger in order to "save the world", Nathan faced off against a mercenary, watched a crime lord be reduced to nothing, and teamed up with one of the people he never expected to.

As a result, he came out on top. Beaten and wounded, he took relief in knowing that the treasure was lost at the bottom of the ocean, never to be found again.

He followed a trail that Marco Polo had left behind. He has looked high and low for Shangri-La, following the legend of the Cintamani Stone, only to find that it was not a treasure, but an elixir that brought immortality and power not meant for a man. It was something that needed to be kept hidden from everyone, something that needed to be destroyed, even if it meant going down a path of betrayal and lies, one that would push him to his limits and beyond. Even if it meant getting tangled and winding up in the cross hairs of a Serbian war criminal, one that was willing to kill those who wound up in the wrong place at the wrong time; anyone who met Nate along the way as he raced to beat the man.

It meant almost losing Elena. Realizing that he could not do this with his friends without someone getting hurt, Nate made the choice to face Lazarevic alone and for it he won, the path to the stone being lost in the process.

No matter what has been thrown at Drake, he has managed to prevail and keep at the top of his game in the end. Nathan continues on, searching for treasure despite the risks that have happened; he waits for a job that will prove all of his effort has been for something, at least. For the name that is Drake, and the legacy that comes hand in hand with it.

From small beginnings.

Roleplay Sample - Log:
The gunfire has him pinned down against a barricade, and it refuses to stop. Breathing heavily, he changes the magazine of the pistol, hears the clips hit the ground and he counts, closes his eyes for a moment despite the rain of splinters that erupt around him as the bullets collide with wood, barely scratching but never exactly hitting the table he's propped himself again. One, two...

Its amazing that they haven't hit yet, he knows that but he isn't willing to say that aloud for worry that through Murphy's law or some other set of rules he doesn't know about, he will jinx himself and get him. Five... The gunfire stops for a moment, the sound of a clip being emptied is heard and Nathan knows this is the time to strike. Forcing the adrenaline to push him further, he turns and points his gun, barely poised above the makeshift wall he's propped up. Eyes take aim and his hands steady. He fires not one or two, but as many bullets as it takes to bring down the guy with the Gatling gun.

Silence, finally; a body hits the ground and the GAU-12 falls over with the soldier. There is a sigh of relief, Nathan feels his shoulders slump and his throat is ridiculously dry. He forces himself up, takes a look around.

Can't stop now, he tells himself. Need to keep going.

Roleplay Sample - Journal:
Whoa! Alright... This should be working, right? [There's a tapping sound as he looks for feedback from the device, however it works. His face is across the screen and its in confusion as he leans in, scrutinizing it with a wrinkled brow, lips pursed in a frown. A small 'hm' leaves his throat and he pulls back.] Testing! One, two... Nathan Drake here, can anyone hear me, or for that matter, help me? Come on, please?

[Its quiet for a moment. Then there is a groan at the lack of response on the other side.] Hello? [Some more tapping.] Oh, come on! You've gotta be kidding me--I already broke this piece of crap?!

[The feed cuts just as the screen gets a nice view of the wall; it appears that someone has just thrown it across the room.]

This game includes horrible mental and physical torture of your character. After reading the rules/faq for clarification, how do you expect your character to handle this and continue to function?: Nate is definitely going to keep going, because he would rather be alive than dead, even with how bad things can get. Even if he is without his friends in this place, he's motivated by the idea of getting back to them. He sure as hell doesn't plan to die in this place. His morals are going to clash with others here, but I expect Nate to get back into the game and do his best to survive.
